Anonymous asked: Hi, David! First off, THANK U for always helping everyone! Second- thank you for being a huge inspiration! I wanted to know if you could recommend pre, during, and post workout supplements. I wanna use them for my leg days b/c I'd like to last longer during the workout and work harder. I'm a female, 5'6", medium frame, 157lb, 27% BF (dont know if u need this info). Any help will do. Thanks in advance!!

Hello,

Thank YOU for the positive words, I just wish I knew who this was! :)

Supplementation comes down to what the individual wants in terms of results as well as how they react to certain ingredients. In other words, a high-stimulant pre workout that yields 350 mgs of caffeine can potentially be too much for an individual who is sensitive to high stimulants.

I would suggest researching some pre workouts and finding out what fits your situation the best then making a choice. There are plenty of great pre workouts on the market; one of the formulas I have recommended the most over the years is Jack3d by USP Labs. It’s actually not very high in caffeine, about 50 mgs per scoop, but the geranium extract still offers plenty of energy and focus for most people.

As for during the training session, BCAA’s are one of your best options. Not only do they serve as an anticatabolic agent during training but they also speed recovery and promote a more anabolic, or muscle building, response. I also recommend another USP Labs product for BCAA’s (no, I don’t work for USP Labs) called Modern BCAA. See this post for more information-

Modern BCAA

Post workout is the time in which most people will benefit from a protein and carbohydrate combination. There are many options out there but I would suggest starting out with a 50/50 split in carbs and protein. Try and find a formula that yields some fast acting nutrients such as whey protein and waxy maize starch. If your workouts are shorter duration and your goal is fat loss, some prefer less carbs and more protein. Again, this is purely up to the individual and what they are after.

I hope this helps.

Anonymous asked: Is playing basketball at the gym for 1-2 hours good for fat loss? I do this, but nearly always in the end I am too tired to have a good weight lifting session, or I have no time for a weight lifting session. Basketball I think is good cardio because it has varying intensity, and even one game of fullcourt 5v5 for about 20-35 minutes get's me sweating good. by the end of a lot of days I can't sweat no more. Is that overtraining? I like basketball, but I want to lose fat. What should I do?

Hello,

A better plan of action would be to lift first then follow it up with a cardio session instead of your current method of cardio first. This will not only allow you to get in a more effective lifting session but it will also create more fat loss because you body has burned up glycogen (stored carbohydrates) during your lifting session, leaving you in a higher fat burning state. Try separating your basketball from your lifting and cardio sessions, or cutting down the time in which you play if you are going to play post lifting. In other words, you most likely will not, and probably shouldn’t, make it through a 1-2 hour ball game post lifting. Stick to a short, 20-30 minute, basketball game if it’s post lifting. Aside from that try out other forms of cardio, such as the stair climber, stationary bike, etc., post lifting.

Anonymous asked: what pill/vitamin supplements do you use?

Hello,

I have used a lot of different supplements over the years; name a supplement category and there’s a good chance I have tried it. Currently I am consuming a lot of basics such as a multivitamin, extra magnesium, fish oils, protein powder, a recovery shake, etc.

You ALL have the right to be passionate!

I think one mistake we make as a society is that we forget that we have the human right to be passionate about something and really own it. I’m talking true passion- shedding tears, feeling emotion move through you, speaking with conviction, inspiring others, never giving up, it’s all true signs of passion. We all have the right to feel that way and practice the steps necessary that go along with that passion no matter what the subject matter is. I personally am passionate about training, nutrition, and health, and I live it every day of my life. Hell, I have shed tears and got emotional speaking of the implications of bad health on our society, and I’m not afraid of that. But passion can extend to anything you want! Photography, painting, auto mechanics, ceramics, medicine, politics, etc., it’s yours to own! No one can tell you to limit your passion… love what you do and live in a relentless fashion to improve yourself and others through your passion! I promise you that our society needs more of it.

So yesterday was a rest day for me; actually, this whole week has been a little more laid back as my body has given me clues it’s time to rest. I spent the day with my cousin, which included eating large amounts of sushi and walking a vast amount. Here’s a picture of Trixie to remind everyone that active recovery can be very beneficial at times. She’s playing with her feather… get it? :)
