Endless opportunities
At times I reflect upon my life at this point and think of how far I’ve come…and I’m blown away! I was the fat kid who couldn’t finish the activities in P.E. I would have NEVER guessed I would turn out to be the person I am today. Now, I’m the person people come to for fitness/nutrition/health related issues. It’s just an example of how wonderful life really is...

Face your fear today!
If we had the ability to take away the fear of failure then most of us would live life in a different fashion. Knowing fear is simply a part of life and facing challenges despite its existence is very powerful. The first step is recognizing while fear might have you fooled into believing you might fail, it’s simply an emotion you are facing. Realize that it does not have to dictate your...

suchaprettyfat asked: I have a question about aerobic and anaerobic exercise.. I read in a book that it's relative to your heart rate.. If your heart rate reaches a level considered anaerobic while trying to do aerobic activity, it doesn't have an adverse effect on accomplishing weight loss does it? For example, when I do couch to 5k my heart rate gets pretty high as the runs get longer, but I am running at a...

Regret?
When was the last time you had some regret after eating junk that you shouldn’t have, skipped a workout, didn’t get the required level of rest, etc,? Now when was the last time you had a level of regret after pushing yourself to go through with a workout, eat clean, get plenty of rest, etc.? Regret is formed when we let ourselves down. Make the proper choices and regret will not be a...

Work on your level, but work hard
It’s important we have goals because they inspire us to keep working and bettering ourselves. Just keep in mind that each of us have a different goal and that is perfectly fine. It is completely normal and acceptable that we all work at a different level in terms of where our strength is at, how hard we work, our level of body fat, etc. The one thing that we hope remains constant is our...

Back to work
Well it’s back to work. I had a weekend full of eating foods that have made the most wanted list when it comes to sculpting a good physique. Christmas at moms meant consumption of foods such as tamales (being the only child who knows how to make them, I also made some), Spanish rice, casserole, fudge, English toffee, red velvet cake, cookies, and truffles. You know when you eat so much the...

Do what is best for you
Sometimes in life we’re put into a situation in which we are forced to decide if we will help someone else at the potential risk of hurting ourselves. In the end we must focus on doing what’s best for us and sometimes it’s not the best choice for the other individual. When this occurs it is best to stay focused on ourselves and realize if a person truly cares for us then the situation will...

How about you?
I’m just going to put this out there, straight up- talk means little with no execution. The next time you catch yourself talking about moves to make, goals to beat, etc., ask yourself truthfully how much of it is being backed by action. It’s vital we hold ourselves to what we say, so don’t let yourself slip up by talking more then you’re doing.

Get fat to lose fat
Many people are looking for fat loss tips. While there are many, many tips around, one of the most effective is using healthy fats to our advantage. Healthy sources such as omega-3’s promote the body to use its stored fat as a fuel source. Additionally, omega-3’s help reduce the inflammatory response which means faster healing times. This of course is simply the tip of the iceberg as...

Anonymous asked: The base of my daily diet consists of greek yogurt, whole wheat bread products, natural peanut butter, fruits, veggies, lean protein (mostly chicken), cottage cheese, and protein shake. Does this sound okay? I also incorporate other foods into my everyday eating but these are the bulk of what I eat. Sometimes I fear its not healthy enough. Thank you!

Chicken and yams
A: You know when I first met this guy he was eating chicken and yams every day!? Like, 'is that chicken and yams again?' David would be like, 'Yeah, chicken and yams.'
J: Chicken and yams, huh?
Me: Yup. That's the magic meal, I'm telling you. Reminds me of Thanksgiving... but without the turkey.

Caffeine- a true performance enhancer
According to the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 90% of Americans ingest caffeine on a daily basis. While there can be side effects associated with caffeine consumption, usually high levels, it clearly has it’s benefits when used correctly. I typically recommend a caffeine source pre workout. When I discover individuals are coffee drinkers I make sure I schedule a strong cup...

Self-motivated
I’ve always been a self-motivated individual. There wasn’t really an individual who “talked me into” working out. When I first began training I forced myself out of bed early in the morning to head down to moms garage on those cold mornings to crank out 45 minute cardio sessions. I asked my mom for a Golds Gym membership. I motivated myself to continue training and eating...

Weighted vest= fun times.
One of my closest friends gave me a weighted vest for my birthday; he knows me very well. The vest goes up to 24 lbs and I already have plans to strap it on and run the steepest hills in the area. Oh yeah, fun times ahead.

Make an example out of yourself
I’ve decided I will make changes. I will improve my physique and take it to a level it has never been. I know that this calls for changes in many aspects of my life, but I’m fine with that. I realize the outcome is worth the sacrifices in which I must go through to achieve it. I’m making a pledge to work hard and push myself towards new goals; goals that I will achieve through...

B vitamins for active people
The next time you are searching for a supplement that will support dieting efforts, consider B-vitamins. The B family is multifaceted in its benefits, many of which serious training individuals who are diet conscious will benefit from. Each B vitamin plays specific roles in the body. Thiamine, or B1, and Niacin, or B3, for example, help in converting nutrients such as carbohydrates and fats into...

I live my life and one of my biggest hopes is that those around me do the same. Each and every one of you is amazing in your own way, PLEASE SHARE IT!

Believe, believe, believe.
Some people will support you, some people will not. The most important aspect is whether or not YOU believe in YOU, and whether or not you support yourself correctly. No other person performs your workouts, eats the correct foods, gets the proper rest, keeps a positive mindset, for you, but YOU. YOU, YOU, YOU. That’s it! No secrets, no magic pills and potions, just you believing in you and...

Well it’s time to face the day and all its challenges it has to offer. If not now, when? The challenges, they simply come and go. Tough times don’t last, tough people do. You can let your situation tear you down or build you up. You can look at negativity or the positivity offered in the situation. We’re strong, each and every one of us. Some find it faster then others, easier...

Lifting correctly and speeding results
Many times I hear people discuss numbers and how much poundage they are pushing in the gym. While it is important to make note of the progress one makes, numbers are not the only thing that matters. The issue for some with being too caught up purely in numbers is they begin to lift poorly and lose sight of form. When this occurs, stronger muscles tend to take over as the body will always...

Busting through plateaus
I see many different ways people train; strength is a major concern for most, which is a great goal that I firmly believe is very important. Strength is a great barometer of how hard we are working and it prepares us for life. As many people continue to train they find out they run into plateaus and strength gains grow stagnate. One thing that must be acknowledged when it comes to plateaus is that...

A missing link- the posterior chain
Some of my best friends are athletes so even if I’m not working directly with any athletes and their training I’m still exposed to training and nutrition discussions for them. I get after them all the time that one of the most common mistakes for athletes, time and time again, is neglecting to train muscles with weight accordingly. Primarily, the posterior chain being ignored is one of...

315 lb rack pulls...easy work
At the end of my workout the other day I did a widow maker set (20 rep set) for rack pulls. It’s been a while since I did one with 315 lbs, achieving 20 full reps at my last attempt. This time however, I got through the 20 reps at a fairly easy pace as opposed to having to fight for the reps the previous attempt. Once the set was done I realized I could have got more reps which means...

Work hard to take yourself there
We all hear it, “this is too hard,” or, “that’s too much work.” When discussing deadlifting a certain poundage my friend told me, “don’t hurt yourself, that’s a lot of weight.” My response was, “it’s only a lot if you’re not strong enough.” My message and attitude remains the same- something is too much or too difficult...
